Isaac Brumfield 1801 SC – 1862 MS
Isaac Brumfield was born 9 March 1801. On 31 January 1827 he married Elizabeth Holmes.[i], [ii]Isaac’s brother, Davis Brumfield, married Elizabeth’s sister, Cynthia Holmes.[iii]Their children were: Lucy Jane (Brumfield) May, Nathaniel Brumfield, Sarah Ann Margaret (Brumfield) Ellzey, Jesse Kelly Brumfield, Polly A. (Brumfield) May, William Henry Harrison Brumfield, Elizabeth Brumfield, Henrietta (Brumfield) Conerly.[iv]
Although Isaac lived in Pike County he purchased land in Walthall County. On 1 September 1834 he purchased 40 acres in Section 10, Township 2 North.[v]On 10 November 1840 he purchased 39 acres in Section 2 of the same township.[vi]
In 1850 Isaac was farming in Pike County. His land there was valued at $1,300. He and Elizabeth had six children at home: Nathaniel, who was a farm hand, Sarah, Jesse, Polly, William, Elizabeth and Henrietta.[vii]
Isaac continued to buy land in neighboring Walthall County. On 1 August 1853 he purchased 40 acres in Section 12 of Township 2 North.[viii]On 1 December 1854 he purchased 80 acres in Section 27 of the same township.[ix]Another 80 acres became his on 1 June 1859[x]and 160 acres were added on 30 November 1859.[xi]
In 1860 Isaac Brumfield was a planter whose real estate was valued at $5,150 and his personal estate at $2,500.[xii]
Isaac’s son, Jesse Kelly Brumfield, enlisted in 1861 in Company K., Brent’s Rifles, of the 38thRegiment of the Mississippi Calvary. He was wounded while he served as a Sergeant. He was captured and paroled at Vicksburg. He was discharged 12 May 1865.
While Jesse was with Brent’s Rifles, his father died. Isaac Brumfield died 14 February 1862.[xiii]
William Henry Harrison Brumfield enlisted 8 March 1862, joining the same company and regiment as his brother. He was wounded and captured in July 1863 in Vicksburg and paroled. William was discharged 26 April 1865.
Elizabeth lived with her daughter, Henrietta (Brumfield) Conerly in 1880 in Holmesville, Pike County. Henrietta’s husband, Jabez N. Conerly, was a farmer. Their children were: Elizabeth Conerly, Thomas B. Conerly, Thomas B. Conerly, Isaac C. Conerly and Edward N. Conerly.
Elizabeth died 24 June 1890.[xiv]
Elizabeth Brumfield was born in Georgia on Feb. 11, 1808; she moved with her parents to Pike Co., Miss. When she was a child; she was married to Isaac Brumfield with whom she lived until his death. Sister Brumfield united with Union church in May 1850, and went into the constitution of Smyrna church in 1863, where she remained a faithful member until her death, which occurred June 24, 1890. She was buried in the old family graveyard. Her funeral was conducted by Elder B. A. Crawford. She leaves a large family to mourn for her.[xv]
