Samuel Camp Kelly, son of Sims and Mary (Camp) Kelly, served in both the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.
One son, Samuel Camp Kelly, … remained in Alabama, and died there Sept. 16, 1891. Samuel Camp Kelly served with distinction in the Mexican War under Gen. Zachary Taylor, and later under Gen. Scott. … Samuel Camp Kelly enlisted in the Confederate Army in April, 1862, and served in all the battles in which the Western Army was engaged, surrendering with Johnston in North Carolina, April 26, 1865. After the war he moved to Oxford, Ala., where he resided until his death, an influential and valued citizen, taking an interest in every public enterprise, and contributing generously to Oxford College.[i]
Samuel’s service as a private in Company I of the Alabama Militia Infantryduring the Mexican-American War and as a Sargent in Company H of the 1stAlabama Infantry during the Civil War is easily verified with military research.[i],[ii]Samuel died 16 September 1891 in Alabama.[iii],[iv]His wife, Amie Elizabeth (Pace) Kelly, died in 1897.
Oxford. After a lingering illness of many months, Mrs. Samuel C. Kelly, mother of Hon. Richard B Kelly, of Anniston, died at the home of Mr. A. B. Scarbrough, near Choccolocco, about 8 p. m. the 22d inst., and after funeral services at Oxford Baptist church, conducted by Revs. E. T. Smyth, J. C. Wright and J. E. Barnard, her remains were deposited by the side of her husband, Capt. Samuel C. Kelly, in Oxford cemetery, the 24th, about 12 M. Mrs. Kelly was a daughter of Rev. Richard Pace, deceased, formerly of this county, and for many years has been a consistent member of Oxford Baptist Church, and a thoroughly devoted, consecrated Christian. She leaves two sons and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.[v]
