Charles Brumfield was born 1 January 1796 in York, South Carolina.[i], [ii]Charles was still a teenager when he served in the War of 1812. He was a private in the 12/13 Consolidated Regiment of the Louisiana Militia.[iii]
On 22 August 1820 Charles married Harriet Knight, daughter of John Knight.[iv],[v]They had seven children: John Brumfield, Margaret Sisley (Brumfield) Bradshaw, Lucy (Brumfield) Sandidge, Thomas Meredith Brumfield, George Davis Brumfield, Oscar Hope Brumfield and Jesse Marion Brumfield.[vi]
Charles purchased land in Yazoo County, Mississippi. In February 1832 he bought 79.84 acres which included a section of Indian Creek[vii], [viii]and in September 1835 he bought another 80.03 acres which were located adjacent to his original land and south west of the town of Dover.[ix], [x]The 1850 US Census shows Charles, Harriet and children living in the same county.[xi]In 1860 Charles was shown as a planter in Yazoo County with sons, Thomas and George, as overseers and sons, Oscar and Jesse, still at home.[xii]
Oldest son, John Brumfield was Chancery Clerk in Yazoo County in 1859, Clerk of the Probate Court in 1860 and Circuit Clerk 1863 – 1864.[xiii]
All five sons of Charles and Harriet served during the Civil War. John Brumfield enlisted 15 March 1862 in Yazoo City, Mississippi as a Sergeant in Company E, 30 Regiment of the Mississippi Infantry. He became a 2nd Lieutenant on 25 August 1862. However, he had to resign in November 1862 due to illness. He was unfit for duty.[xiv]Thomas Meredith Brumfield enlisted 4 February 1862 as a private in the 1stMississippi Light Artillery. He was discharged 4 May 1865.[xv]His brother, Oscar enlisted on the same day. Oscar Hope Brumfield was a sergeant in Company E of the 46thRegiment of the Mississippi Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted 4 February 1862 and was discharged 4 May 1865.[xvi],[xvii]George Davis Brumfield “served as Pvt. Co. E 38th MS Cav. and later as Pvt. Co B 1st MS Lt Art (CSA)”[xviii]Their youngest brother, Jesse Marion Brumfield was a private in Company K, 10thRegiment of the Mississippi Infantry. He enlisted 27 February 1862 and was discharged 26 April 1865.[xix],[xx]
Charles died 29 July 1870.
Died at his residence in Yazoo county, on 29thJuly 1870 Charles Brumfield, a native of York District, South Carolina, for the last 60 years a resident of this state and for the last 40 years of Yazoo county, where he has reared a large and respectable family – a man of the strictest integrity – just and true in all the relations of life.[xxi]
